Nevada grand jury indicts 2 on robo-signing charges

Nevada grand jury indicts 2 on robo-signing charges by ANDREW SCOGGIN

Two people were indicted in Nevada on alleged robo-signing charges connected to foreclosure filings, according to the Office of the Nevada Attorney General.

Gary Trafford and Gerri Sheppard, both California residents described as title officers, were indicted on a total of 606 counts by a Clark County grand jury. The indictments did not say where Trafford and Sheppard were employed.

Charges include allegations of offering false instruments for recording and false certification on certain instruments, both felonies, at the Clark County Recorder's Office between 2005 and 2008. The two were also charged with notarization of the signature of a person not in the presence of a notary public, a misdemeanor.

The documents, notices of default, were used to initiate foreclosures, according to the attorney general's office. Trafford and Sheppard allegedly told employees to forge their names and notarize the signatures.

A former employee supervised by Trafford and Sheppard said she forged signatures on more than 25,000 notices of default, according to KLAS-TV in Las Vegas.

Las Vegas, the seat of Clark County, is one of the hotbeds of the housing crisis. The city was No. 5 in a list of top U.S. foreclosure cities in October from RealtyTrac after holding the top spot for 22 months.

The robo-signing scandal broke last fall, and since then has resulted in numerous investigations, including a 50-state attorneys general investigation. Discussions of a potential settlement in the AG case are still under way.

A district court judge set bail at $500,000 each for Trafford and Sheppard.

Jury delivers antitrust blow to Rambus

Memory-chip designer Rambus lost more than 60 per cent of its stock market value after a San Francisco jury rejected its seven-year-old antitrust claim against chipmakers Micron Technology and Hynix Semiconductor.

The verdict knocked Rambus stock down to $7.11, its lowest level in nearly three years, giving it a market capitalisation of less than $2bn.to keep D-Ram with Rambus technology out of the market.

“We do not agree with several rulings that affected how this case was presented to the jury and we are reviewing our options for appeal,” said Rambus chief executive Harold Hughes.
Micron shares jumped 23 per cent on the verdict, which followed a three-month trial. The company said the decision vindicated its position that Rambus had simply lost out in the free market.

“[Micron] might have settled out of court for somewhere in the $300m range,” said Kevin Cassidy, analyst at Thomas Weisel. “This saves them that money.”
Rambus has reached chip licensing deals with other companies, including Samsung, for hundreds of millions of dollars.
Rambus appeared to get an advantage during a price-fixing probe of memory chip makers. That exposed emails showing concern that PC makers might prefer some of Rambus’ technology, and indicated that the chip groups might have agreed to keep their own technology priced low.
A 2001 email from Linda Turner, then an international sales vice president at Micron, said of Hynix’s competing Double Data Rate memory technology, “We want DDR to explode in the marketplace so have actually been requesting Infineon, Samsung and Hynix to lower their DDR pricing to help it become a standard and drive Rambus away completely.”
But in a strong counter-attack, some of the defendant companies accused Rambus of manipulating the process for setting standards in the industry. They said Rambus manouevered to get its own contributions accepted while plotting to patent the designs, suing for high royalties only after they were widely adopted.
The Federal Trade Commission in 2006 ruled that Rambus had engaged in an anticompetitive “hold-up”.
The European Commission launched a similar inquiry, which Rambus only resolved by accepting a cap on the royalties it can charge.

Haiti end 2014 qualifiers on a high

Haiti completed their CONCACAF World Cup qualifying Group F campaign with a 2-1 home win over pool winners Antigua and Barbuda.

Jamie Thomas gave the visitors an early lead as they looked to complete the group campaign with their perfect record intact, but second-half strikes from Judelin Aveska and Kervens Belfort Fils turned the game on its head.

Also in Group F, Curacao completed their campaign with a 6-1 thumping of bottom team the US Virgin Islands.

Shannon Carmelia and Richmar Siberie grabbed a brace apiece while Everon Espacia and Angelo Cijntje were also on target for the hosts, who cruised to victory despite the dismissal of Rugenio Josephia four minutes before half-time.

Keithroy Cornelius netted the visitors' consolation five minutes into the second half - only their second goal in qualifying - but they finished the group stage without a point on the board.

Elsewhere, goals from Olivier Occean, Dwayne De Rosario (penalty), Josh Simpson and Tosaint Ricketts earned Group D winners Canada a comfortable home win over St Kitts and Nevis.

Group C winners Panama also closed out the campaign in style with a 3-0 home triumph over Dominica, thanks to goals from Rolando Blackburn, Ricardo Buitrago and substitute Blas Perez.

Group A winners El Salvador finished on a high with a 4-0 win over Suriname, Osael Romero and substitute Rafael Burgos bagging two goals apiece.

Second-half goals from Kenwyne Jones and Lester Peltier secured Trinidad & Tobago a 2-0 win over Group B winners Guyana.

In Group E, pool winners Guatemala completed the campaign with a 100% record thanks to a 4-1 triumph in Grenada.

Shane Rennie had put the hosts ahead with a 37th-minute penalty but it all went wrong for Grenada following the 61st-minute dismissal of Cassim Langaigne.

A Michael Mark own goal restored parity before further strikes from Fredy Thompson, Guillermo Ramirez and Angelo Padilla sealed an emphatic away win.

Finally, Belize won 2-0 in St Vincent and The Grenadines.
